More ChatGPT patterns, practices, and prompts

This post picks up the trail and continues with more prompts and frameworks.

While I’d recommend going back to the previous post in this series to see where we started, it’s not required. In this post, we’ll continue exploring prompt rubrics or frameworks, giving examples on how to transform everyday questions into effective prompts.

Here we go!

CARE (Context-Action-Result-Example)

Humans learn best by personal experience. In AI-based scenarios, though, an AI platform isn’t going to be able to go out and have the experience of eating a sandwich or feeling the sun on its face. It can, however, learn by examples.

In the CARE prompt framework, you’re doing just that–providing the instructive context and guidelines and then providing an example of what a known good output looks like.

  • Provide CONTEXT for the scenario
  • Describe the task or ACTION the AI assistant should perform
  • Clarify your expected RESULT or output
  • Supply an EXAMPLE that shows the model what a suitable answer looks like

Without the prompt

In this example, we’ll ask the assistant to build a campaign for a pizza delivery company.

**Campaign Title:** "Pizza Bliss Delivered to Your Doorstep" **Slogan:** "Savor the Flavor, We Deliver!" **Campaign Overview:** Introducing Pizza Bliss, your go-to pizza delivery service that brings mouthwatering, handcrafted pizzas right to your doorstep! Our campaign focuses on highlighting the convenience, quality, and variety that Pizza Bliss offers to satisfy every pizza lover's cravings. **Campaign Components:** **1. TV Commercial:** Showcase scenes of happy families, friends, and individuals enjoying their Pizza Bliss creations in the comfort of their homes. Emphasize the joy of pizza and how it brings people together. End the commercial with a special limited-time offer and a clear call to action: "Order now and experience Pizza Bliss for yourself!" **2. Social Media Presence:** Create engaging social media posts and stories that showcase our delicious pizza varieties, the speed of delivery, and customer testimonials. Encourage followers to share their #PizzaBlissMoments for a chance to win free pizza for a year. **3. Online Ordering Website:** Revamp the website to make it user-friendly, with mouthwatering images, an easy-to-use ordering system, and an updated menu. Highlight any ongoing promotions, loyalty programs, and contactless delivery options. **4. Exclusive Deals and Discounts:** Offer limited-time promotions such as "Two-for-One Tuesdays" or "Family Feast Fridays" to entice customers to order more frequently. Implement a loyalty program where customers earn points with each order for discounts and freebies. **5. Influencer Collaborations:** Partner with local food influencers to create engaging content about Pizza Bliss. Have them showcase their favorite Pizza Bliss creations, share personal stories, and offer exclusive discount codes to their followers. **6. Delivery Guarantee:** Promise a swift and reliable delivery service with a "30-Minute or Less" guarantee. If we don't meet this commitment, customers receive a discount on their next order. **7. Customer Testimonials:** Share video testimonials from satisfied customers talking about their love for Pizza Bliss. These can be shared on social media, the website, and in email campaigns. **8. Email Marketing:** Send out regular newsletters with updates, special offers, and exclusive deals to our loyal subscribers. Personalize emails based on customer preferences and ordering history. **9. Community Engagement:** Participate in local events, sponsor community gatherings, and donate pizzas to charity events to foster a positive brand image and give back to the community. **10. Mobile App Launch:** Develop a user-friendly mobile app for easy and convenient ordering. Offer a special discount for the first app orders to incentivize downloads. **11. Outdoor Advertising:** Place billboards, bus advertisements, and posters in high-traffic areas to increase brand visibility and reach a broader audience. Remember to maintain a consistent brand image, using the same visuals, slogans, and messaging across all campaign components. Keep an eye on customer feedback and adjust your strategy as needed to ensure a successful pizza delivery service campaign that leaves customers craving for more Pizza Bliss!

Not bad for 10 seconds of effort on my part. But what kind of results can we get with a better prompt?

STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result)

Many folks might be familiar with this acronym in the context of job interviews.  Frequently, in an interview scenario, a hiring manager is asking you to elaborate on a particular example as it relates to a question. For example, you might be asked, “Was there ever a time when you had to deal with a failed repair?” A suitable response would include a brief synopsis of the background (situation), the task you were expected to perform, the steps you took as part of the task, and what the outcome was.

This framework has a whole life outside of describing your experience to a potential employer.

The components of a STAR prompt are:

  • Position a SITUATION or scenario
  • Assign the model a TASK
  • Provide additional or clarifying ACTION
  • Define the qualities present in a the RESULT

Let’s see how it work!

Without the prompt

Suppose you are planning a family vacation. Without a prompt, your interaction with an AI assistant might go something like this:

Family vacations can be a great way to bond, create lasting memories, and explore new places together. The ideal destination and activities depend on your family's interests, budget, and the age of your children. Here are some family vacation ideas to consider: 1. **Beach Resort Vacation:** Relax on the beach, swim, build sandcastles, and enjoy water sports at a family-friendly beach resort. 2. **National Park Adventure:** Explore the natural wonders of national parks, hike, camp, and discover wildlife. 3. **Disney or Theme Park Vacation:** Visit Disneyland, Disney World, or other theme parks for a magical experience. 4. **Cruise:** Take a family cruise to various destinations, with activities and entertainment for all ages. 5. **Camping Trip:** Camp in the great outdoors, roast marshmallows, and go hiking or fishing. 6. **City Exploration:** Explore vibrant cities, visit museums, historical sites, and dine on diverse cuisine. 7. **Road Trip:** Embark on a road trip, stopping at interesting landmarks, towns, and natural attractions along the way. 8. **European Adventure:** Discover European cities rich in history and culture, with family-friendly attractions. 9. **Ski or Snowboarding Trip:** Head to a ski resort for winter sports, hot chocolate, and cozy evenings by the fire. 10. **Cultural Immersion:** Experience different cultures by traveling to countries with unique customs, traditions, and cuisine. 11. **Volunteer Vacation:** Combine travel with giving back by participating in volunteer projects or eco-tourism initiatives. 12. **RV or Camper Trip:** Rent an RV or camper for a flexible, family-friendly adventure on the road. 13. **Historical Journey:** Explore historic sites, battlefields, and museums to learn about the past. 14. **Island Getaway:** Visit a tropical island for snorkeling, relaxation, and water activities. 15. **Farm Stay:** Experience farm life, help with chores, and enjoy fresh produce on a farm stay. 16. **Outdoor Adventure:** Go on an adventure vacation with activities like zip-lining, white-water rafting, or rock climbing. 17. **Train Journey:** Take a scenic train ride through picturesque landscapes. 18. **Wildlife Safari:** Go on a safari to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. 19. **Educational Trip:** Plan a vacation around your family's educational interests, such as science, history, or art. 20. **Staycation:** Explore your own city or region as tourists, visiting local attractions you may have overlooked. Remember to consider the interests and preferences of every family member when planning your vacation. Also, factor in travel restrictions, budget, and the duration of your trip to ensure it suits your family's needs.

As with other examples in this series, the model can come up with some great answers (even with little input detail).

With the STAR prompt

Of course, now it’s time to see how a more specific prompt can be used to get a more detailed response.

These destinations offer a great mix of outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, and family-friendly attractions for a memorable 5-day vacation in the southwestern United States.

As you can see, providing a detailed list of results or expectations really pays off.

RISE (Role-Input-Steps-Expectation)

RISE is another framework that you can use and combines the role concept from other prompt constructs, the use of additional input detail or examples to set the context, and a request for a clear output with additional boundaries or guideposts in the form of expectations.

The RISE framework is comprised of the following elements:

  • Frame the ROLE that the assistant should play
  • Describe the background data to be used as INPUTS
  • Ask the model for STEPS to complete a task
  • Describe or define the goal or EXPECTATION of the output

Let’s say you’re working at an organization and you need to generate some ideas for a new subscription box service for cheese lovers.

Without the prompt

First, we’ll just ask a broad question about our nascent cheese subscription box without the framework, like we’ve done in the past:

Creating a content strategy for a new cheese subscription service is crucial for attracting and retaining customers. Your strategy should focus on educating, entertaining, and engaging your target audience while showcasing the value of your cheese offerings. Here's a step-by-step guide to developing a content strategy: 1. Define Your Target Audience: - Identify the specific demographics and psychographics of your ideal customers. - Understand their cheese preferences, knowledge level, and interests. 2. Set Clear Goals: - Determine the objectives of your content strategy. For example, increase brand awareness, grow your subscriber base, or boost customer retention. 3. Content Themes and Topics: - Brainstorm a list of relevant themes and topics related to cheese that resonate with your audience. - Consider topics like cheese pairings, cheese-making processes, cheese trivia, cheese recipes, and more. 4. Content Types: - Create a variety of content types to keep your audience engaged. Options include blog posts, videos, social media posts, infographics, and email newsletters. 5. Content Calendar: - Develop a content calendar to plan when and where you will publish your content. - Ensure consistency in posting to maintain audience engagement. 6. Educational Content: - Share in-depth articles or videos explaining the different types of cheese, their origins, and unique characteristics. - Offer tips on how to properly store and serve cheese. 7. Cheese Pairing Guides: - Create content that suggests wine or food pairings with your featured cheeses. - Host virtual cheese and wine pairing events or workshops. 8. Customer Stories: - Share customer testimonials, reviews, and stories about their experiences with your cheese subscription service. 9. Behind-the-Scenes: - Provide a behind-the-scenes look at your cheese sourcing process, introducing your cheese makers and suppliers. - Showcase your commitment to quality and sustainability. 10. Seasonal Promotions: - Develop content around seasonal and holiday-themed cheese offerings. - Highlight limited-time offers and discounts. 11. User-Generated Content: - Encourage customers to share their own cheese-related content and experiences. - Feature user-generated content on your website and social media channels. 12. Social Media Engagement: - Use social media platforms to connect with your audience, run contests, and share visually appealing cheese-related content. 13. Email Marketing: - Send regular newsletters with cheese recommendations, recipes, and exclusive subscriber offers. - Segment your email list for personalized content. 14. SEO Optimization: - Ensure your content is optimized for search engines to increase organic traffic to your website. 15. Metrics and Analysis: - Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as website traffic, engagement, subscriber growth, and conversion rates. - Use analytics to refine your content strategy based on what works best. 16. Evolve and Adapt: - Continuously review and adapt your content strategy based on audience feedback and changing trends in the cheese industry. Remember that the key to a successful content strategy is consistency, authenticity, and providing value to your audience. As you deliver valuable content, you can build a loyal customer base and establish your cheese subscription service as a trusted source for cheese enthusiasts.

And, like a lot of the examples before, we’ve gotten a decent high-level strategy, but not anything specifically actionable.

With the RISE prompt

Next, we’ll adapt the prompt using the RISE method by supplying specific details about our target audience and potential questions, ending by instructing the assistant to create a few pieces of content:

Content Strategy Plan for Cheese Subscription Box Service: **Step 1: Audience Research and Understanding** Before creating content, it's important to understand your audience. In this case, the target audience is people new to gourmet cheeses with potential questions and concerns. Gather insights through surveys, social media listening, and market research to better tailor your content. **Step 2: Create Engaging and Informative Blog Posts** Create blog posts that address common questions and concerns: **Editorial Calendar:** *Month 1: Introduction & Benefits* - Week 1: Blog post - "Welcome to the World of Gourmet Cheese: Our Cheese Subscription Box Service Unveiled" - Week 2: Blog post - "Why Gourmet Cheese Matters: A Journey into the World of Flavors" - Week 3: Blog post - "How to Pair Cheese with Wine, Crackers, and More" - Week 4: Blog post - "How Our Cheese Subscription Box Works: A Step-by-Step Guide" *Month 2: Quality and Assurance* - Week 1: Blog post - "Ensuring the Safety of Shipped Cheese: Our Packaging and Handling Process" - Week 2: Blog post - "How We Curate Cheese: From Selection to Your Doorstep" - Week 3: Blog post - "What Happens If You Don't Like a Cheese? Use engaging visuals, testimonials, and special offers (e.g., free trial) to entice potential subscribers. **Step 4: Customer Support Content** Create an FAQ section on your website that addresses these common questions in detail. Link to these FAQs in your blog posts to provide readers with more information. **Step 5: Collaborations and Guest Posts** Consider collaborating with cheese experts, chefs, or food bloggers to create guest posts. These can add credibility and variety to your content. **Step 6: Video Content** Produce short video clips showcasing unboxing experiences, cheese pairing tips, and behind-the-scenes looks at your curation process. Share these on social media and your website. **Step 7: Engaging Introductory Letter for Blog Post** [Blog Post Title: Welcome to the World of Gourmet Cheese: Our Cheese Subscription Box Service Unveiled] Dear Cheese Enthusiasts, Are you ready to embark on a journey through the delicious world of gourmet cheeses? Other ideas

Generative AI is a brave new world. So far, there aren’t any hard-and-fast rules about getting the exact responses you want each time. There’s a certain degree of randomness that comes into play. Just like asking 10 different people the same question can result in 12 answers, AI-based assistants are pretty similar.

I’ll recap some of my learnings over the last year or so here:

  • There’s no definite right way to do this. It’s new.
  • Feel free to mix and match prompt frameworks. You might get an idea using one framework that you really like–parlay it into a new prompt framework to help refine it!
  • Another idea is to start with a broad, general prompt to start the creative process. Then, take some of the key thoughts in a conversational style and start drilling down into them.
  • As you refine your ideas, provide more detailed guidance and specifics. You’ll get closer to the answers you’re looking for.

As the old saying goes, “unspecific data in, unspecific data out.”
